阳极棒:你从没听说过的最重要的热水器部件Anode Rod: The Most Important Water Heater Part You've Never Heard Of
牺牲阳极棒是热水器的无名英雄。它防止水箱腐蚀,延长热水器寿命数年。了解它的作用和更换时间。The sacrificial anode rod is the unsung hero of your water heater. It prevents tank corrosion and extending your water heater's life by years. Learn what it does and when to replace it.
What Is an Anode Rod?
An anode rod is a metal rod (usually magnesium or aluminum) that hangs inside your water heater tank. Its sole purpose is to corrode so your tank doesn't. This is called "sacrificial" protection — the rod attracts corrosive elements in the water, protecting the steel tank lining.
How It Works
Through a process called electrolysis, the anode rod attracts minerals and corrosive particles in the water. These particles attack the rod instead of the tank walls. Over time, the rod dissolves — when it's mostly gone, the tank itself starts corroding.
Signs Your Anode Rod Needs Replacement
- Rotten egg smell in hot water (sulfur bacteria reacting with a depleted magnesium rod)
- Rusty hot water — the tank may be starting to corrode
- Water heater is 3-5 years old and rod has never been checked
- Popping noises — sediment often accelerates when the rod is depleted
Types of Anode Rods
Magnesium
Most common. Works well in most water conditions. May cause sulfur smell if water has high sulfate content.
Aluminum/Zinc
Better for areas with hard water or sulfur smell issues. Less effective corrosion protection than magnesium.
Powered (Impressed Current)
Uses electrical current instead of sacrificial metal. Never needs replacement but costs more ($100-$200 for the rod vs $20-$40 for standard).
Replacement Schedule
- Check every 2-3 years
- Replace when more than 50% corroded (usually every 3-5 years)
- NYC's water quality typically requires replacement every 3-4 years
Cost
DIY: $20-$40 for the rod (but can be difficult to remove)
Professional: $150-$250 including parts and labor
Why Most People Don't Know About It
Anode rods are hidden inside the tank and rarely mentioned in owner's manuals. Most water heaters fail prematurely because the anode rod was never replaced. It's the single most cost-effective maintenance item — a $200 replacement can extend your water heater's life by 3-5 years.
