Why 120°F?

Below 120°F — Bacteria Risk

Legionella bacteria (which causes Legionnaires' disease) can grow in water below 120°F. The bacteria thrives between 77°F and 113°F. Setting your water heater below 120°F creates a breeding ground.

Above 140°F — Scalding Risk

Water at 140°F can cause third-degree burns in just 5 seconds. At 150°F, burns occur in 1.5 seconds. Children and elderly are especially vulnerable.

How to Check Your Current Setting

Gas Water Heater

Look for the temperature dial on the gas control valve (near the bottom). Many don't show exact degrees — they use labels like "Warm," "Hot," and "Very Hot."

Electric Water Heater

Exceptions to the 120°F Rule

• Immunocompromised household members: Consider 130-140°F with anti-scald mixing valves
• Dishwasher without built-in heater: May need 140°F for proper sanitizing
• Large household with high demand: 125°F might provide better performance
